WEST ORANGE, NJ (updated Tuesday, Sept. 20, 10:03 a.m.) – The Seton Hall Prep varsity soccer team raised its record to 4-0-1 by posting three victories this past week.
On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Pirates traveled to North Caldwell and defeated West Essex, 2-1, in overtime. SHP opened the scoring with 21:07 left in the first half when senior midfielder Brian Tevlin put in a rebound of senior forward Mason Toye’s shot. West Essex tied the match at 1-1, 1:04 into the second half. The score remained tied heading into the first overtime period when senior forward Ryan Vazquez headed in junior midfielder Nick Kriak’s cross with 3:24 left for the victory. SHP outshot West Essex, 13-3. SHP sophomore goalie Liam Bertrand had two saves.
On Thursday, Sept. 15, the Pirates defeated Millburn, 2-1, in overtime in Millburn.
SHP scored with 20:30 left in the first half when Toye scored off a rebound of his penalty kick. Millburn tied the match at 1-1 with 6:25 left in the first half. Toye scored with 6:55 left in the first overtime period when he ripped a shot into the upper-right hand corner of the goal from 10 yards. SHP outshot Millburn, 13-7. Bertrand had six saves.
On Sunday, Sept. 18, the Pirates traveled to The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., for the Mid-Atlantic Soccer Jamboree against The Kiski School from Saltsburg, Pa.
It was a memorable day for the SHP soccer team. The Pirates played before 50 college scouts who attended the event. SHP trailed 2-0 at the half as Kiski scored two goals in the first 3:27 of the match. In the second half during a 15-minute stretch, SHP scored four goals to take a 4-2 lead and the victory. Toye opened the scoring with 23:43 left on assists by junior midfielder Michael Pavick and senior midfielder Adam Ned. Pavick followed with a goal at 21:30 on assists by Toye and Vazquez to tie the match. SHP went ahead when Toye took a through ball from Ned and scored with 11:52 left. Ned closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal with 8:59 left. SHP outshot Kiski, 10-6. Bertrand had four saves.
After the game, SHP head coach Marty Berman said, “This was a great opportunity for our players to showcase their skills before so many college coaches.”
Ned said of The Kiski School, “We heard they have some great players and Division 1 college commits, so we were really pumped up for the game. We knew that we could come back being down 2-0 so early and we had to stay focused and play our game.”
