Seton Hall Prep soccer team moves to 8-1-1 record

WEST ORANGE, NJ (updated Tuesday Oct. 4, 2:08 p.m.) – The Seton Hall Prep varsity soccer team went 2-1 last week to move to a record of 8-1-1.

On Sept. 27, the Pirates traveled to Father Glotzbach Field in Nutley and defeated Nutley High School, 8-2. Senior forward Ryan Vazquez, junior midfielder Frank DeLuca, and sophomore forward Skyler Storms each scored two goals, and senior forward Mason Toye and junior midfielder Duren Horsey each had one goal. DeLuca and sophomore midfielder Joe Kearns each had two assists and junior midfielder Nick Kriak, senior defenseman Nick Biunno, Toye, junior forward Joe Cubero, sophomore midfielder Brian Zimmerman, and senior defenseman Winston James each had an assist. Sophomore Liam Bertran had three saves, and juniors Gabe Ferreira and Casey Thompson each had two saves.

On Sept. 29, the Pirates traveled to the Ironbound section of Newark and defeated Newark East Side, 1-0, at the Ironbound Rec. Center. Toye scored 8:31 into the second half when he drilled a shot from the top of the penalty box into the lower left-hand corner on assists by Vazquez and Kriak. SHP outshot East Side, 8-6. Bertrand had four saves.

Following the match, Toye  said, “East Side is a very good team. They are well-disciplined and hard-working. Ryan played a good ball to me and I found the corner of the net.” Senior defenseman Michael Georgiou said, “We worked very hard as a defensive unit. We defended man-on-man tough so they would have a hard time getting good shots on goal.”

On Saturday, Oct. 1, the Pirates traveled to Hightstown to take on Peddie and lost for the first time this season, 3-0. The Pirates outshot Peddie, 11-8. Bertrand had five saves.
