Seton Hall Prep weekly recap: Basketball team wins 2 straight; wrestling team tops Caldwell; hockey team downs Millburn

WEST ORANGE, – The following are recaps of the Seton Hall Prep basketball, wrestling and hockey teams.

Basketball

The Seton Hall Prep varsity basketball team defeated Union Catholic and Payne Tech in back-to-back games during a three-game homestand at Frank J. Tracey Gymnasium last week to raise its record to 9-6 on the season.

On Thursday, Jan. 24, the Pirates defeated state-ranked Union Catholic, 64-51. Ashton Miller scored 25 points with five assists; Geordan Walker scored 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds; and Mario Bollo scored nine points with seven rebounds to lead the Pirates.

On Saturday, Jan. 26, the Pirates defeated Payne Tech, 55-43. Walker led the team with 14 points, while Bollo scored 10 points with five rebounds and eight assists. Miller and Josh Hopson each scored seven points and Colin Flaherty had four assists and four steals.

The Pirates lost to Immaculate Conception of Montclair, 67-64, in a really tough Super Essex Conference-American Division battle, Jan. 22.

Miller scored 25 points with five rebounds and six assists; Mike Curran scored a career-high 22 points with three rebounds and four assists; Denis Murphy scored 10 points with three assists; and Colin Flaherty had seven rebounds and seven assists.

The seeding meeting for the 73rd Essex County Tournament was scheduled for Monday night, Jan. 28, at Caldwell High School. The brackets will be released on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at noon.

Wrestling

The Seton Hall Prep wrestling team improved to 10-2 on the season when the Pirates traveled to Caldwell High School and defeated the home team, 48-25, Jan. 25. The top SHP wrestlers thus far this season by record are:

Junior 170-pound Michael Massa, 21-5 record; sophomore  152-pound Jack Wilt, 20-6; junior 120-pound Larry Melchionda, 20-6; sophomore  126-pound Conner Decker, 19-7; senior 285-pound Niko Diakides, 19-8; junior 182-pound Zach Merlino, 18-9; sophomore  113-pound Gabe Jimenez, 16-9; junior 195-pound Andrew Mitzak, 15-9; sophomore 138-pound Cole Carroll, 15-10; freshman 106-pound Joseph Sciarrone, 14-10; and junior 145-pound Aidan Cunningham, 14-12.

Ice hockey

The Seton Hall Prep ice hockey team defeated Millburn, 4-0, at Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange, Jan. 27, to improve to an 11-6-2 record.

Mark Sandomeno opened the scoring with a short-handed goal 4:46 into the first period on an assist by Aidan D’Urso. Ryan Rodrigues made it 2-0 with a goal on an assist by Tyler Fogu and James Gabriel made it 3-0 with just 1:17 left on assists by Mark Gall and Sandomeno.

In the second period, Rodrigues scored his second goal of the game on an assist by Gabriel just 3:32 into the second period.

Sophomore Patrick Ackerman made 17 saves to record his second shutout of the year.

Millburn is coached by former Seton Hall Prep All-State forward and Hall of Famer Brandon Doria.  Following his senior season, he was named as the 1998-99 New Jersey Ice Hockey Player of the Year by the Star-Ledger and the New Jersey Devils.
