WEST ORANGE, NJ — The Seton Hall Prep wrestling team won the team championship at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s District 3 tournament at Pascack Valley High School in Hillsdale on Saturday, Feb. 17.
The Pirates had 264 points, among the 10 schools. This was the Pirates’ 23rd team district title.
Pascack Valley was second with 163.5 points.
SHP advanced 11 wrestlers out of a possible 14 to the finals and boasted seven champions.
The following are the SHP wrestlers in the finals:
106-pound weight class: sophomore Joseph Viola technical fall over Hassan Shawkat of Pascack Hills, 15-0, 4 minutes, 38 seconds.
113: junior Anthony Pellegrino major-decisioned Dylan Biegel of Pascack Valley, 18-7.
120: senior Logan Brzozowski pinned Jonathan Rotolo of Northern Valley at Old Tappan, 5:41.
132: sophomore Andre Morero decisioned Luke Stempkowski of Pascack Valley, 7-2.
138: senior Carlo Vanvolkenburgh decisioned Christian Fojon of Ramsey, 7-6.
144: junior Nicholas Orejola pinned Brady Dransfield of Indian Hills, 1:23.
157: Sean Herman of Pascack Hills decisioned senior Casey Farrell, 4-3.
165: Owen Delgado of Ramsey decisioned senior Evan Surmay, 5-4.
175: Julian Morris of Pascack Valley pinned sophomore Brandon Papa, 5:56.
190: Zak Darwish of Ramapo pinned junior Clark Rich 3:45.
215: sophomore Rocco Salerno pinned Adrian Galvez of Glen Rock, 0:38.
Brzozowski won his third district title, Orejola and Salerno each won their second district title, and Viola, Pellegrino, Morero and Vanvolkenburgh won their first district titles.
The 11 SHP wrestlers will advance to the NJSIAA’s Region 1 tournament at West Milford High School on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24.
Sophomore 126-pound Matthew Farley Jr. and senior 150-pound Aidan Manning both finished in fourth place at the district.
After the district tournament, SHP head coach Lou Mascola said, “The majority of our guys went out there today and got the job done. A couple of guys went out there and wrestled hard and came up just short of a district title. We are very proud of the overall team performance. We are looking forward to another great performance on Friday and Saturday at West Milford HS in the Region 1 tournament.”
