West Orange High School football team falls to Montclair in state playoffs

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School varsity football team pulled off a stunning upset in the season opener on August 30 when the Mountaineers rallied to beat Montclair, then-ranked No. 8 in the state, by a score of 26-19 at WOHS.

Unfortunately, the Mountaineers couldn’t pull off another stunner in the rematch, as top-seeded and defending champion Montclair ended the eighth-seeded Mountaineers’ season with a 35-0 win in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 5 state playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Woodman Field in Montclair.

WOHS, under head coach Jim Matsakis, finished the season at 3-7.
