WEST ORANGE, NJ – Sean Brown earned his second win of the season, allowing one hit and striking out six in five innings pitched, to lead the West Orange High School varsity baseball team to a 10-3 win over Glen Ridge on Monday, May 7.
Leading the Mountaineers with three hits was Julian Lee. Chris Walker and Tyree Bradley hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the sixth for WOHS, which improved to a 12-6 record..
The 10th-seeded Mountaineers had a good run in the Greater Newark Tournament.
The Mountaineers began the tournament with a 13-9 home win over No. 23 seed University in the preliminary third round on May 1. Brown went 3-for-3 with three singles, three RBI, and three runs; Walker went 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs; and Bradley scored two runs. Vincent DeSantis struck out nine over 3 1/3 innings.
WOHS then lost at seventh-seeded Newark Academy, 5-4, in the first round on May 5. WOHS scored a run in the top of the second to tie it 1-1 and scored two runs in the third for a 3-1 lead. Newark Academy scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 4-3 and added a run in the fifth to make it 5-3. WOHS scored in the sixth to make it a one-run game, but fell short.
Aaron Puryear had two hits and Walker had two RBI for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers defeated Verona, 16-9, April 30, at Verona in a Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division game. Walker went 2-for-3 with a single, double, two RBI and three runs and Christopher Spagnuolo went 2-for-4 with two singles and two RBI. Bradley, Erik Castro and Lee each drove in a run. Walker was the winning pitcher, striking out nine over 3 2/3 innings.
WOHS fell to West Essex, 8-7, May 3, in a SEC-LIberty Division game. The loss ended the team’s four-game winning streak. Puryear had two singles, a double, and two RBI; DeSantis had two singles and two RBI and Spagnuolo hit a solo homer. Aidan Healy also had two singles.
