WEST ORANGE – Paul Casolaro went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Liam White went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs as the 10th-seeded West Orange High School varsity baseball team defeated seventh-seeded Livingston, 6-5, in the first round of the Greater Newark Tournament on May 9 in Livingston.
The Mountaineers scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 6-3 lead.
Andrew Scholz allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits and Anthony Casolaro retired the final two batters in the bottom of the seventh for the save.
WOHS, which improved to a 10-4 record, will visit second-seeded Millburn in the quarterfinals on May 12. The winner will face the winner of No. 6 seed Newark Academy and No. 3 seed Nutley in the semifinals doubleheader at Belleville High School on Saturday, May 14.
In their previous game, the Mountaineers lost to Montclair, 8-4, May 4, at home. The loss ended the WOHS’ five-game winning streak.
