West Orange HS boys’ basketball team falls to Newark West Side in Essex County Tournament

Mountaineers' five-game win streak ends as team moves to 15-3 record

WEST ORANGE – Senior forward Doug Hughes scored 14 points and senior forward Jeremiah Moore had 11 points but the 12th-seeded West Orange High School boys’ varsity basketball team lost at fifth-seeded Newark West Side, 68-51, in the first round of the Essex County Tournament on Feb. 13.

Senior guard Patrick Jamison had 10 points; senior guard Chris Smith had six points; and sophomore point guard Nasheim Harte and junior guard Gabe Silvera each netted five points for the Mountaineers, who had their five-game winning streak snapped and moved to a 15-3 record.

In their previous game, Moore had a strong game with 25 points, 11 rebounds, six blocks and two steals to lead the Mountaineers to a 67-50 home win over 21st-seeded Livingston in the third preliminary round of the ECT on Feb. 10. Jamison had 16 points and two steals; Silvera had eight points, five assists and four rebounds; Hughes had seven points and five rebounds; Harte had seven points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals; and Smith added two points and six rebounds.

WOHS is the No. 3 seed in the state North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 tournament and will host No. 14 seed Mount Olive in the first round on March 1.
