West Orange HS boys’ soccer team comes up short in repeat bid; falls in heartbreaking penalty kick shootout to Kearny in section final

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School boys’ varsity soccer team’s bid for a repeat state North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 tournament championship was denied in heartbreaking fashion.

The third-seeded Mountaineers lost in a penalty kick shootout to top-seeded Kearny in the championship game on Thursday, Nov. 10, in Kearny.

The game was scoreless after regulation and two overtimes, forcing a penalty kick shootout. Kearny won the penalty kick shootout, 4-3.

The defending champion Mountaineers, under head coach Doug Nevins, finished the season with a stellar 15-2-3 record. Nevins has been at the WOHS helm since 2000.
