West Orange HS boys’ soccer team is No. 4 seed in ECT

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School boys’ varsity soccer team is seeking to make a strong run in the Essex County Tournament.

The Mountaineers, under head coach Doug Nevins, received the No. 4 seed in the 31-team field. WOHS will begin play in the round of 16 on or by Oct. 18  against either No. 20 seed Orange, No. 29 Weequahic or No. 13 Verona. The quarterfinals are Oct. 20. WOHS could face No. 5 seed East Side in the quarterfinals. The top seed is Montclair. Millburn is the No. 2 seed and Seton Hall Prep is No. 3. The semifinals will be held Oct. 25 at Livingston HS and the final is Oct. 27 at Millburn HS at 5:30 p.m.

WOHS defeated Verona and Barringer, both by 5-0 scores, to improve to 9-3-1.

Sophomore Kalleo Mendes scored three goals and added one assist in the 5-0 win over Verona on Oct 10.

Senior Brian Merlos had a goal and an assist. Ari Rosu scored a goal. Seniors Zach Dong, Jaihid Sawyers, and Tyreke Wray each had one assist. Matt Kotowski made four saves and fellow senior AJ Petrucci stopped three shots to combine for the save.

Mendes had a goal and an assist and junior Yasin Aly and seniors Roodlensky Charles, Ritchy Claude, and Edgar Moreno scored in the win over Barringer on Oct. 12 on Senior Day. Wray had two assists. Kotowski had four saves and Jackson Edwards had one save.
