West Orange HS boys’ soccer team tops Caldwell and Belleville to improve to 2-1

WEST ORANGE, NJ – With goals by Manny DiPierola and Tyreek Wray in the second half, the West Orange High School boys’ varsity soccer team held off Caldwell 2-0 on Sept. 13 for its first win of the season.

West Orange’s Kalleo Mendes assisted on both goals.

Goalie AJ Petrucci had five saves for the Mountaineers, who improved to 1-1.

“The boys earned a hard-fought victory over a tough team,” said WOHS head coach Doug Nevins. “It took us 70 minutes to break through, but we eventually got the first goal when Kalleo Mendes crossed the ball to Tyreek Wray. Manny DiPierola sealed the win with a beautiful shot three minutes later, and AJ Petrucci earned the shutout with five saves. It was a great team win today.”

Mendes had a goal and an assist in the 4-0 win at Belleville Sept. 15. Yasin Aly, Alan Becerra, and Facundo Gomez each had a goal; Wray collected two assists and Brian Merlos had one assist. Petrucci made two saves and Matt Kotowski had one save in the shutout as the Mountaineers improved to a 2-1 record.
