West Orange HS boys’ soccer team upsets No. 2 seed Morris Knolls to advance to state tournament semifinals

 

ROCKAWAY, NJ – Senior co-captain Maurice Williams scored in the first overtime to lift the seventh-seeded West Orange High School varsity boys’ soccer team to a 1-0 win over second-seeded Morris Knolls in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 state tournament on Friday, Nov. 3, in Rockaway.

Senior co-captain and goalie Paul Shuler made five saves for the WOHS Mountaineers, who improved to 12-4-4.

West Orange will visit third-seeded rival Montclair in the semifinals on Nov. 7. Montclair defeated 11th-seeded Union City, 1-0, in the quarterfinals to improve to 13-2-1.

The other semifinal pits fifth-seeded Fair Lawn at top-seeded Kearny. The championship game is Nov. 10 at the higher-seeded site.

West Orange played Montclair to a scoreless tie in a Super Essex Conference-American Division game on Sept. 11 at home in its second game of the season.

In the first round, the Mountaineers defeated 10th-seeded Mount Olive, 3-0, Oct. 31. Edgar Moreno, a junior, had a goal and an assists and Williams and junior Wes Rideau-Winds each had a goal. Senior co-captain Brent Llewelyn and junior Tyreke Wray each had an assist and Shuler made six saves.
