Mountaineers to visit Irvington as WOHS head coach/Irvington alumnus Darnell Grant makes homecoming

WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange High School football team defeated Bloomfield, 42-14, at Joe Suriano Stadium on Friday night, Oct. 22, in a Super Football Conference–Freedom Red Division game.

The Mountaineers won their fourth straight game to improve to 6-2 overall on the season and 5-1 in the division. 

In a game studded with outstanding Mountaineer action, WOHS quarterback Zander Lipsey went eight for 10 passing for 198 yards and had three touchdowns, Makhi Green had three receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown, Jared Massey had two receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown, Jekhi “Choo-Choo” Williams was back from an injury with 77 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Rayel Hunter had 94 yards rushing and one touchdown. Kicker Sam Godinez went 6-6 on extra points.

WOHS will visit Irvington on Friday night, Oct. 29, in a battle of 6-2 teams in an SFC crossover game in the regular-season finale.

It will be a reunion of sorts for WOHS head coach Darnell Grant, who is an Irvington High School graduate, Class of 1991. Grant was the head coach for Irvington from 2002 to 2009, during which time he resurrected the program. He had a 64-21 record at Irvington. In 2003, Irvington made the state playoffs for the first time since 1975. The current playoff system started in 1974. Grant also took Irvington to its first state championship game in 2006, in which Irvington lost to New Brunswick in the North 2, Group 3, final at Rutgers.
