West Orange HS boys’ soccer team falls in state tournament semifinals to end strong season

The West Orange High School varsity boys’ soccer team ended another successful season.

The seventh-seeded Mountaineers lost at third-seeded Montclair, 3-0, in the semifinals of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 state tournament Nov. 7 in Montclair in a matchup of Super Essex Conference-American Division teams.

West Orange tied Montclair, 1-1, in the second game of the season in a division meeting.

The Mountaineers finished the season with a 12-5-4 record. Two losses were to town neighbor Seton Hall Prep – 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 9 in a division game at home and 3-0 in the Essex County Tournament semifinals in Belleville.

West Orange was guided by head coach Doug Nevins, who completed his 18th year at the helm. In 2016, defending champion West Orange was eliminated by Kearny in the championship game in a penalty-kick shootout in the North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 state tournament. West Orange also was the NJSIAA Group 4 state champion in 2015.
