West Orange HS girls’ basketball star Mya Bembry signs with Penn State

WEST ORANGE, NJ – West Orange High School senior Mya Bembry signed a National Letter of Intent in accepting an athletic scholarship to continue her basketball career at Penn State University on the NCAA Division 1 level, as family, friends and coaches cheered her on during a ceremony on Nov. 20 at WOHS.

After fielding offers from around the country, Bembry decided on Penn State and committed on August 7.

This past season, Bembry scored her 1,000th career point during a 61-36 win over Teaneck at home on Jan. 30 while also  posting 10 rebounds and five steals to log her 12th double-double of the year.

Bembry averaged 19.5 points per game, 13.5 rebounds, and 4.9 steals per game for the season and was named Super Essex Conference Player of the Year, helping the Mountaineers capture their first-ever NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 state tournament title with a 56-50 win over Hackensack on March 7. WOHS finished the season with a 22-8 overall record.

The Mountaineers will open the 2018-19 season on Dec. 14 at East Orange Campus at 7 p.m.
