WEST ORANGE – Mya Bembry had 14 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four steals to propel the West Orange High School girls’ varsity basketball team to a 56-44 win over Columbia on Feb. 2 in South Orange. Kaija Jones had 11 points and Jewel Burnett had 10 points, three rebounds and five assists.
WOHS lost a tough 49-48 home decision to undefeated Newark Academy on Feb. 4. Jocelyn Willoughby made two free throws with five seconds left to lift Newark Academy, which outscored WOHS, 12-9, in the fourth quarter to improve to a 15-0 record. Jones had 11 points, Bembry had 10 points and 12 rebounds and Burnett had 10 points for WOHS.
The Mountaineers lost at Secaucus, 54-39, Feb. 6. Bembry had 16 points, Candis Ferrell had 11 points and Burnett had seven points for WOHS, which moved to a 6-10 record.
The eighth-seeded Mountaineers will host ninth-seeded Bloomfield in the Essex County Tournament first round on Feb. 13.
