West Orange HS girls’ basketball team improves to 7-0

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School girls’ varsity basketball team defeated Newark Academy and Morris Catholic to remain unbeaten on the season.

Senior guard and Penn St.-bound Mya Bembry and freshman guard Kiley Capstraw each scored 19 points to power the Mountaineers  to a 67-35 win over Newark Academy on Jan. 3 at Newark Academy in Livingston. Bembry also had nine rebounds, seven blocks, five assists and four steals, while Capstraw collected eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Kaya Schultz scored 10 points; sophomore guard Mackenzie Dover had nine points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals; and senior guard Ebony Odom Barnes had four points and five rebounds.

WOHS defeated Morris Catholic, 53-49, Jan. 5 at Morris Catholic to improve to 7-0. Kiley Capstraw had 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists and Bembry had 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals. Senior guard Bianca Fede had seven points and three assists; Dover recorded five points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals; and senior guard Kaija Jones and Schultz each had two points. WOHS, trailing 31-29 at the half, outscored Morris Catholic, 14-8, in the fourth quarter.
