West Orange HS girls’ basketball team soaring to great heights

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School girls’ varsity basketball team defeated East Orange Campus and Newark Arts to improve to a 12-2 overall record and 7-2 in the Super Essex Conference-American Division.

Senior guard and Penn State-bound Mya Bembry had 19 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three assists and freshman guard Kiley Capstraw had 18 points, 17 rebounds and four assists to lead WOHS to a 52-35 home win over East Orange Campus, Jan. 22. Sophomore guard Mackenzie Dover had eight points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists; senior guard Kaija Jones had three points; sophomore guard Kaya Schultz had two points with six rebounds, four assists and three steals and junior guard Davionna Phillips added two points with three rebounds and two steals.

Bembry had 25 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and two assists and Capstraw had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the 52-41 win at Newark Arts, Jan. 24. Dover scored six points with three rebounds and three steals; senior guard Ebony Odom Barnes notched four points, five rebounds and two steals; Bianca Fede had three points, two assists and two steals and  Jones had two points, two assists and two rebounds.

The Mountaineers hope to gain a high seed in the 45th Essex County Tournament. The seeding meeting for the ECT was scheduled for Jan. 28. The brackets will be released Jan. 29.
