WEST ORANGE, NJ – Mya Bembry had 20 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, four blocked shots and four steals, all team-highs, to lead the West Orange High School girls’ varsity basketball team to a 52-28 home win over East Orange Campus on Jan. 18 in a Super Essex Conference-American Division game.
Nahtali Simpson had 12 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists and Aliya Perkins posted nine points and five rebounds for West Orange, which avenged a 46-40 loss to East Orange in the season opener on Dec. 15.
Cassidy Ferrell also had 11 rebounds, three blocks and two points and Mackenzie Dover had six points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
West Orange improved to 7-4 overall and was tied with East Orange for third place in the division with 4-3 division records. East Orange fell to 7-5 overall. University was in first place and Newark Tech was in second place.
In earlier action, the Mountaineers lost a tough 48-45 decision to host Newark Tech on Jan. 16 in a division game. Bembry had 24 points, 18 rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks. Bianca Fede had seven points; Dover had five points and four rebounds; and Madison Mitchell recorded four points and six boards; Ferrell grabbed seven boards and Simpson had three points, three boards and three steals.
