WEST ORANGE, NJ – The top-seeded and undefeated West Orange High School varsity girls’ soccer team defeated ninth-seeded Nutley, 1-0, in the Essex County Tournament quarterfinal round on Saturday, Oct. 21, at home.
“It was a very hard-fought, extremely tough game,” said WOHS head coach Sean DeVore, whose team improved to 12-0-3. “Both teams played with a ton of heart. Nutley defended great throughout the game and countered on us a few times that put us in dangerous spots, Our back 4 and goalkeeper did a great job. We were 0-0 at half. About 15 minutes in, Kaya Schultz scored a great goal from about 25 yards out to the far post to go up 1-0. We hit the crossbar with about 10 minutes left but the game ended 1-0.”
The Lady Mountaineers will meet fifth-seeded Montclair Kimberley Academy in the ECT semifinals doubleheader at Millburn HS on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. Second-seeded Montclair will meet third-seeded LIvingston in the other semifinal at 5 p.m.
“The girls are extremely excited about going to the semifinals,” said DeVore. “It has been a great run for the team but the coaches reminded the girls that you are only as good as your next 80 minutes. We know we are going to play a very good MKA team with a chance to go to the final if we can win.”
The championship game is Saturday, Oct. 28, at Caldwell at 7 p.m.
