West Orange HS girls’ soccer team finishes its best season ever

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School girls’ varsity soccer team enjoyed its best season ever.

The Mountaineers’ magnificent run came to an end with a tough 2-0 loss to Bridgewater-Raritan in the NJSIAA Group 4 state championship game on Tuesday night, Nov. 13, at Indian Hills in Oakland.

The loss ended the Mountaineers’ incredible 39-game unbeaten streak dating to last year as they ended this season with a 19-1-2 record.

Despite the loss, WOHS head coach Sean Devore was ecstastic for his team’s great run.

“It’s kind of hard to single out any one player; this group was the true definition of a team,” said Devore. “No one cared who scored or who got in the newspaper; they all did it together. As a coaching staff, we couldn’t be prouder of the girls and their accomplishments.”

This season Mountaineers won the Essex County Tournament championship and the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 state tournament championship, both for the first time ever.

In the ECT final, the No. 1 seed Mountaineers beat No. 11 seed Glen Ridge, 2-1, in overtime on Oct. 26 at Caldwell. Nyah Harper scored the winning goal.

In the North 1, Group 4 final, the No. 1 seed Mountaineers defeated No. 3 seed Livington, 1-0, on a goal by Harper.

In addition, the Mountaineers had their highest state ranking ever at No. 3 and their highest national ranking ever at No. 18.

WOHS also won the Super Essex Conference-American Division championship.

Last season, the Mountaineers finished 13-0-5, included being eliminated in the county and state sectional tournament semifinals, both by penalty-kick shootouts against Montclair Kimberley and Livingston, respectively.
