WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School girls’ varsity soccer team took care of business last week.
Entering the week, the Lady Mountaineers sat a game under .500. But when it was all said and done, West Orange’s three earned victories throughout the week saw the team’s record improve to an overall mark of 6-4-2.
Second-year head coach Sean Devore was certainly pleased with the team’s play as of late as his squad outscored its opponents by a combined margin of 11-1.
“The girls had a nice week as we won all three games this past week,” he said.
To start the win streak, the team defeated Bayonne with a convincing 4-0 shutout win.
In the team’s next match, WOHS claimed a second straight triumph with another convincing win, this time defeating Orange by the score of 6-1.
Then to finish the week, Devore’s group picked up its third straight victory with possibly its most impressive performance this season, a 1-0 win against Mount St. Dominic Academy.
Overall, the WOHS head coach credited his team’s defense for the recent success.
“Our back four of junior Reyna Rahaman, sophomores Nyah Harper and Mya Bembry and freshman Kiara Pachuca have been great,” he said.
Considering what lies ahead, it could be argued that the team’s recent win streak couldn’t have come at a better time.
“We have a game on Monday (Oct. 10) at Caldwell and then our state and county tournament seeds will be set,” Devore said.
