WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School girls’ varsity tennis team, under head coach Jeff Mazurek, concluded a banner season.
The Lady Mountaineers finished with an 11-6 overall record and shared the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division title with Nutley. They finished 9-1 in the division.
Mazurek was proud of his team for overcoming adversity.
“There was a lot of uncertainty about who would be playing varsity for the team this year. We graduated 11 seniors last season, and were only returning one varsity player for this season in junior Siena Pizzano,” said Mazurek. “Through a lot of hard work throughout the summer and during the preseason, we established a very strong lineup that I was confident could compete with every team we would play.
“Some highlights for the season include our 4-1 win against Nutley, who had previously beaten us 3-2, our win in the first round of the NJSIAA tournament against Hackensack, and capturing the Super Essex Conference- Colonial Division championship.”
Mazurek was proud of his team for achieving its goals of improving on last year’s 6-11 record and winning the conference championship.
“I could not be prouder of a group of student-athletes and I am extremely excited for the future of West Orange Tennis,” Mazurek said. “We are only graduating one player from this year’s varsity team, so we are all looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”
