WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School girls’ tennis team seeks to achieve more success this season.
Head coach Jeff Mazurek’s team had a 4-2 record through Sept. 22.
“The girls have been extremely competitive in every match this year,” said Mazurek. “We have picked up very close and exciting wins against Belleville and Bloomfield, both by a score of 3-2.”
At the Essex County Tournament on Sept. 21, the team lost both matches, falling to Montclair Kimberley Academy, 5-0, in the first round and Nutley, 3-2, in the consolation quarterfinals.
“Although we did not advance in the Essex County Tournament, the girls played outstanding tennis and I could not be more proud of the way they have worked and performed up to this point in the season,” said Mazurek.
Sophomore Funmi Oshodi, junior captain Siena Pizzano and junior Jackie Idowu comprise the top three singles spots respectively. Freshman Kaia Baker and sophomore Alynna Sanchez consist of the first doubles team, while junior Noor Qureshi and senior Julia Lawrence combine at second doubles.
The team was scheduled to face Nutley on Sept. 28. If West Orange beats Nutley, that would help the Mountaineers clinch the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division, Mazurek said.
