WEST ORANGE – The West Orange United Soccer Club teams enjoyed impressive wins for the week-ending Oct. 16.
The Barcelona U13 boys remained undefeated after beating Randolph at home, 5-0. Mason Bashkoff had two goals. Andrew Hinfey, Squire Thomas, and Shane Brosnan each had a goal. The Barcelona boys take on undefeated West Morris at West Orange High School on Friday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m.
The Gunners U9 girls continued their season after having last weekend off with a two-game sweep. Their first game was played Saturday afternoon at O’Connor Park in West Orange against a strong Rutherford team. The Gunners played a strong first half, using great ball-handling, passing and movement of the ball and once again strong defense to hold a 2-1 halftime lead. They opened the second half with the ball and quickly drove to the net and scored.
They continued to play well, spreading the field and moving the ball to create many scoring chances. The girls continued their dominance and opened up a 7-1 lead with scoring from four different players. This victory improved their season record to 4-0.
The girls had another game on Sunday against an undefeated Tenafly team. The girls played a strong and competitive first half with great ball skills and teamwork, putting together multiple passes and shots at goal. The Tenafly goalie played strong in the net to hold down West Orange to a halftime lead of 2-1. Tenafly opened the second half with the ball, but wasn’t able to penetrate the West Orange defense. West Orange, with quick counter attacks, jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second half. Coach Telmo Nunes made some position changes, experimenting with the players in different positions and the result was similar to prior games.
With this victory, the Gunners increased their record to 5-0 and will try to maintain their unblemished record this weekend versus an undefeated Nutley team.
