WEST ORANGE – The West Orange United Soccer Club opened the spring season this past weekend.
The Swansea U10 girls started the season on an impressive note, defeating River Dell, 6-1, at Liberty Middle School. Swansea trailed 1-0 at the half despite dominating possession and chances in the first period. River Dell scored on its only shot of the first half, deep into injury time. After the break, Swansea came out flying and reeled off six unanswered goals. Gianna D’Amore led the way for Swansea with a hat trick. Fazi Annan contributed a pair of goals, and Francesca Schuler added one as well.
The West Orange side benefited from super passing by Lucy Fishkin, Morgan Miller, and Shelly Gualipa. Madison Cyrus was a rock in defense, in front of goalkeeper Amie Binan, who kept a clean sheet in the second half. Maya Bank, Charlotte Lewis, Chloe Mondi and Brooke Schenk also contributed with strong performances.
The Fury U12 girls won the season opener, defeating Pequannock, 3-0. Lizzie Fleming scored the first goal on a pass from Olivia Telemaque by popping the ball over the keeper’s head. Ximena Macavilca scored the second goal on a pass from Madison Oliver. Oliver netted the final goal with Kennedy Morgan on the assist. Caitlin Bridgers hit the crossbar on an amazing shot from outside of the 18-yard line and Britney Fort Foskey also had a shot on target. Esme Solis Mauner, Anna Akerblom and Tori Rideau Winds all added excellent field play.
Camille Ferrell made several saves and recorded the clean sheet.
