New police substation is opened at Felton Field

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Bloomfield inaugurated the opening of a police substation at Felton Field on Tuesday, Oct. 3, with a ribbon cutting. A non-binding public referendum had approved creating a substation in 2013. Bloomfield Public Safety Director Sam DeMaio said it was a good location to have the facility after hearing concerns from residents in the area.

The station will be manned by the Community Policing Unit of the Bloomfield Police Department, Monday through Friday, but not on a regularly scheduled and hourly basis, DeMaio said. But it will be manned during field activities. Two new doors were added to the 20-foot by 40-foot concrete building. They are protected with roll-down shutters.

The building had not be used for five years, Mayor Michael Venezia said. It has several office spaces and a kitchen that will be upgraded and used by the Department of Recreation, according to its director, Michael Sceurman. The cost to remake the building into a substation was $17,200, DeMaio said.
