IRVINGTON, NJ — With the Pop Warner youth football season under way in Irvington, Newark, East Orange and throughout New Jersey, the new field that is the centerpiece of the Rev. Ronald B. Christian Sports and Recreation Complex in Weequahic Park is being put to good use.
Teams, including the South Side Bulldogs and the Brick City Lions, are playing games on the new field every Sunday morning. And anyone who knew “Rev. Ron,” the pastor of Christian Love Baptist Church in Irvington who died last year, said he would be proud to have a positive impact on his community’s children and families.
“This could possibly keep generations safe, active and happy for years to come,” said Derrick Edmundson, Christian’s cousin, on Wednesday, July 20, during the dedication ceremony for the new sports and recreation facility. “It could possibly produce the next Newark sports icon and Rev. Ron, he would have appreciated this.”
