WEST ORANGE, NJ — The ninth annual West Orange High School senior citizen prom brought together seniors from across the township with enthusiastic students, who entertained their guests with an evening of dining, dancing and conversation.
A record crowd of seniors, who are invited each year from senior living, nursing homes and senior housing, filled the Tarnoff Cafeteria to enjoy a catered meal by Sodexo and ongoing musical performances from members of the West Orange High School jazz band.
A special performance by local WOHS band “Citrus” capped off an evening filled with laughter and dancing. The band includes Justin Davis on drums, Sam Klein on guitar, Nick Mongelli on piano, Tahir Springer on bass, Austin Jackson and Ryan Goodman on saxophone, and Luis Soto on trombone. Seniors Victoria Estoque and Henry Gardner provided vocals for the evening.
“Senior citizen proms, or intergenerational proms, have been growing in popularity nationally over the past several years,” WOHS Principal Hayden Moore said in a press release. “It’s an excellent way to connect the younger generation with our senior citizens. It breaks down barriers, builds friendships and trust, and lets the community know what a great group of kids we have at the high school.
“We’re already looking forward to next year’s prom,” Moore added.
