IRVINGTON, NJ — Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly announced the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau is investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred Friday, March 16, in Irvington.
“Shortly before 4 p.m., Irvington police officers were dispatched to the area of 39 Lincoln Place, on report of a person armed with a gun,” said Fennelly in press release Saturday, March 17. “Police units arrived in the area and spotted the suspect. In the course of attempting to apprehend the suspect, one police officer discharged his service weapon. No one was injured as a result of the weapons discharge.”
Fennelly went on to note that Irvington officers recovered a weapon at the scene of the incident.
“During the course of the apprehension, an Irvington officer recovered a handgun from the suspect,” said Fennelly. “The suspect, Jahad Goff, age 18, of Irvington, has been charged with weapons offenses and resisting arrest. The suspect is being held in custody, pending an appearance in the Essex County Central Judicial Processing Court.”
Fennelly noted the investigation of the incident remains active and ongoing, adding, “Attorney General Guidelines require all county prosecutor’s offices to respond to incidents, whenever a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon.”
Irvington Public Safety Director Tracy Bowers said he was proud of the way his officers handled the incident and that he was glad there was no loss of life.
“I commend the officers for a job well done,” said Bowers on Monday, March 19. “And I appreciate the officers risking their own lives for the safety of the public.”
