Abby Scheidel, Girls basketball
NHS sophomore
When did you start playing basketball?
I started playing basketball in third grade for the Nutley Recreation program and in fourth grade I began playing travel. I joined my first AAU team in fifth grade.
Is there any single on-court memory that sticks in your mind?
The one on-court memory that really sticks in my mind is this season when we beat Arts High School. Everyone stepped up that night and we held them the whole game. We all hit key shots to solidify the win, a win that ultimately was the key to our team winning a division title. The excitement was something that I think none of us will forget.
Great year this season! What was so special about this year’s team?
I think that our team chemistry was what was really special about this year, things really started to click. A lot of us have been playing together since fifth grade. We are not just teammates, we are friends.
How did the team get pumped up for a game?
Before each game we would get to the gym a little earlier so we could blast music in the locker room and just have fun. I think that was an easy way to calm our pre-game nerves. After a while we would eventually talk a game plan with coach and get prepared for what we were about to face.
What are your strengths on the court? Are there skills you’re trying to improve or develop?
One of my strengths is the ability to scan the court and see everything in front of me which is really important as the point guard.
However, this year I believe my shooting has improved and developed into one of my strengths, but this is something I need to continue to develop along with driving hard to the basket. These are skills I enjoy working on in the offseason. I usually try to take 500 shots three or four days a week in the summer
What’s your favorite subject in school? How come?
My favorite subject is math, but my favorite class in school is radio/TV broadcasting. This is something that I’ve recently become more interested in and hope I can continue these types of classes in college. I really enjoy being behind the camera and involved in the behind-the-scenes production.
Are you in any other activities in school or the community?
Yes, I’m actively involved in basketball clinics for young kids. The last couple years I’ve helped the Blaze hoop crew run the K-2 Hoops program in Nutley.
What music are you listening to these days? TV shows?
I enjoy listening to all kinds of music. One of my favorite pastimes is singing along while blasting music in my room. I mostly watch Netflix shows like “The Vampire Diaries,” “One Tree Hill,” and “Friends.”
Congratulations Abby!
Well deserved Abby! Congrats!
