Students will ‘get it together’ for Teen Summit 2015

ORANGE, NJ — Teen Summit 2015 – Get it Together will be at Lincoln Avenue School, 216 Lincoln Ave., Orange, on Friday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 10 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 14, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Students from grades six through 12 throughout the Orange Public School District — seven elementary schools, Orange Preparatory Academy and Orange High School — are invited to attend.

The event organizer is Laura Sacks, school nurse at Orange Preparatory Academy. Present will be Superintendent of Schools Ronald C. Lee and invited guests/participants, including Mayor Dwayne D. Warren and Dr. Karma Warren, along with Orange Preparatory Academy Co-Principals Aretha Malloy and Dana Gaines and school district teachers, administrators, volunteers and sponsors.

The summit’s goal is to help teens, ages 12 – 18, who attend Orange Public Schools, learn reasonable and effective strategies to lead safe, healthy and productive lives. The second event will take place on Saturday, April 2, 2016.

The theme Get it Together! relates to the “New Jersey Health Initiative” grant the district received to foster a culture of health and wellness in the Orange community. The summit will expose students to ways they can get healthier in all facets of life — physically, emotionally and socially.

On Friday, Nov. 13, there will be a performance by actor, psychologist and poet, Dr. Michael Fowlin, a.k.a. Mykee Fowlin, on the social/emotional issues teenage are facing. Afterward, there will be a student panel discussion, “Let Our Voices be Heard.” Students will be able to share ideas about their school and community.

On Saturday, Nov. 14, there will be a keynote address by Dr. Eddie Jumper from the NJ Community Research Initiative, an HIV/AIDS community-based organization, on wellness in all aspects of our lives. The remainder of the day will be filled with presentations, seminars, and informative workshops. The day will end with raffles and prizes for attendees.

The event is free of charge and includes a free T-shirt — Saturday only — prizes, entertainment and food. All students must register online to participate. Students can register at: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/orange-teen-summit-2015-registration-19138046412
