Seth Boyden sends letter home after driver approaches child on way to school

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Seth Boyden Principal Shannon Glander sent a safety advisory to the school community on Jan. 24, stating that a student had been approached by a driver on their way to school. The student is safe and unharmed.

“One of our students reported that, while walking to school this morning, a driver approached and offered him a ride to school. The boy refused and the driver insisted — even following the student for a little bit in his car. The student was close to school and ran into the building and informed administration,” Glander wrote, adding that she contacted the Maplewood Police Department, who responded promptly and is currently investigating the incident. “We are grateful that the student is safe, and thank the Maplewood Police Department for their swift response and action.”

Following this incident, Glander also sent home some safety tips for children who walk to and from school, including: walk with a friend whenever possible; be on time for school so that crossing guards and other police officers are present and monitoring safety; and immediately inform school administrators and/or law enforcement personnel should anything suspicious or threatening occur.

“Our primary concern continues to be the health, safety and well-being of our entire school community,” Glander wrote. “Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools and our community safe.”
