Seton Hall Prep runners begin a race this season.
WEST ORANGE — On Thursday, Oct. 8, at Cedar Grove Park in Cedar Grove, the Seton Hall Prep cross-country team completed its Super Essex Conference–American Division schedule, winning three meets to capture its fourth consecutive SEC–American Division title, as the Pirates defeated Bloomfield 18-41, Nutley 18-45 and West Essex-15-50.
The top Pirates were sophomore Asher Carney, 16:51.8; junior Ben LePond, 17:02.5; sophomore Aiden Walsh, 17:35.0; sophomore Owen Chung, 17:41.5; and junior Ezana Zewgo, 17:48.3.
After the meet, SHP head coach Chris Barnitt said, “Our goal each week of competition is the same goal. We have each day of practice and that is to show up and put in a good day’s work. I am proud of the commitment and hard work that our young team has demonstrated. Senior Charlie Grube is our captain and has been a top guy over the last four years, while Carney was a top guy this season.”
Barnitt is in his 13th year as the head coach. His teams have captured eight SEC–American Division titles, including the last four seasons. When asked about his four years with the cross-country team, Grube said, “It is amazing how we have accomplished this feat. We put our best out there to win each race. Each year, we have a different type of team and we got the job done.”
When asked about the team winning the title, Carney said, “I am very excited about the team capturing the title and it is pretty awesome. This year, we have a deep team and we have a lot more to accomplish. This season, I am more serious about running as I also play baseball.”
On Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 13, the Pirates were scheduled to compete in the Super Essex Conference race at Cedar Grove Park. On Friday, Oct. 23, at Cedar Grove Park, the Essex County Championships will take place.
