Ta’Quan Roberson sparks DePaul football team back to state title game

ORANGE/WEST ORANGE (updated Monday Nov. 20, 1:58 p.m.) – For the second year in a row, Orange native and West Orange resident Ta’Quan Roberson has sparked the DePaul Catholic High School varsity football team to the NJSIAA Non-Public Group 3 championship game.

The junior quarterback passed for six touchdowns to lead the DePaul Spartans to a  42-21 win over fourth-seeded St. John Vianney in the semifinals on Friday night, Nov. 17, in Wayne.

Roberson completed 15 of 17 passess for 191 yards, along with the six touchdowns. He has passed for 2,303 yards and 29 touchdowns this season.

Roberson already made his college choice as he made a verbal commitment to Penn State.

DePaul will face third-seeded St. Joseph (8-3) in the championship game in a rematch of last year’s title game won by St. Joseph, on Saturday, Dec. 2, at Kean University in Union at 1 p.m.

DePaul has reached a state championship for the fifth straight year. The Spartans won three straight state championships from 2013 to 2015, beating Holy Spirit to win Non-Public Group 2 titles in 2013 and 2014.

DePaul beat St. John Vianney to win the Non-Public Group 3 title in 2015.

The Spartans were going their fourth straight state title, but lost to St. Joseph.
