WEST ORANGE — The West Orange High School boys soccer team was looking for payback.
The Mountaineers’ two losses last year were to St. Benedict’s Prep, including one in the Essex County Tournament final. West Orange went on to win the sectional and Group 4 state championships.
The two teams met again in an early-season matchup. St. Benedict’s is ranked No. 1 and West Orange is ranked No. 2 in the state by nj.com. St. Benedict’s also is the No. 1 team in the nation and West Orange is No. 8 by United Soccer Coaches.
The Mountaineers’ quest for redemption unfortunately fell short, as St. Benedict’s came out on top again 1-0 on Thursday, Sept. 3, at Riverfront Park in Newark. The lone goal came in the second half in the 67th minute by Babacar Seck on an assist from Leondro Menacho.
Senior goalie Agustin Arrieta made five saves for West Orange, which moved to 1-1. SBP moved to 2-0.
In the season opener, the Mountaineers defeated Newark Academy 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Newark Academy in Livingston. Senior Yenke Suarez scored two goals and senior Darius Millington scored one goal. Junior Damian Aviles had two assists, senior Joseph Castillo had one assist and Arietta made one save.
