MINEOLA, N.Y. — On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, Sept. 12, the Seton Hall Prep football team came from behind in the second half to record its first victory of the season, defeating Chaminade 30-11 at Ott Field at Gold Star Stadium in Mineola, Long Island.
Trailing 11-9 entering the third quarter, the Pirates drove 65 yards in nine plays on their first drive, with junior Leonard West running it in from the 2-yard line and senior Jackson DeStefano adding the extra point to give them a 16-11 lead with 8:12 left.
After a Chaminade punt later in the quarter, the Pirates drove 54 yards in seven plays, with West catching a center screen pass from senior Jaylin Bullock and running it in from 22 yards out. DeStefano added the extra point to increase their lead to 23-11 with 1:54 left. In the fourth quarter, the Pirates closed out the scoring with sophomore Adonis Rabrun running it in from 28 yards out and DeStefano adding the extra point with 3:36 left.
In the first quarter, the Pirates took a 2-0 lead when the Chaminade center snapped the football out of the end zone for a safety. Chaminade scored a touchdown and conversion run to take an 8-2 lead with 10:48 left in the second quarter. The Pirates retook a 9-8 lead when senior Cadel Barilford caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Bullock. Chaminade then hit a 45-yard field goal with :17 left to take an 11-9 lead into halftime.
Following the game, SHP head coach Bill Fitzgerald said about the victory, “I am very proud of the team’s effort and execution today. The defense had a shutout in the second half, while the offense scored on every second-half possession.” West added, “We played very well today and cut down on the mistakes. In the second half, the offense fired off the ball and they fed off our defensive effort.” Rabrun added, “We played with real focus today, especially in the second half on both sides of the ball on offense and defense.”
