WEST ORANGE — The West Orange High School football team defeated Irvington 19-0 on Thursday, Sept. 10, at Irvington High School for its second straight shutout to improve to 2-1 on the season.
West Orange scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, as junior running back Tyreon Spruell ran for a 1-yard score and senior quarterback Daniel Lewis connected with junior Evian Mishoe on a 58-yard scoring pass, for a 12-0 lead.
Lewis ran for a 73-yard TD in the third quarter. Sophomore Noah McKinney kicked the extra point.
Defensively, senior linebacker Dylan Adams had six tackles to lead WOHS. Junior Kolbi Turner had five tackles and one forced fumble. Senior lineman Faheem Issah had five tackles. Senior end and Rutgers commit Sydney Padilla had four tackles and one forced fumble.
Irvington moved to 2-1. West Orange head coach Darnell Grant is an IHS graduate and former IHS head coach.
Grant will face another old team, when the Mountaineers visit Shabazz on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. in Newark. Grant was the Shabazz head coach before coming to West Orange in 2019. He led Shabazz to two North 2, Group 1 state sectional titles in 2014 and 2017.
Shabazz is 2-0 on the season. They have won three straight state sectional titles, winning North 2, Group 1 in 2023; North 1, Group 2 in 2024; and North 2, Group 2 in 2025.
Irvington will host Passaic County Tech on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. The Blue Knights are coming off their first loss of the season, falling to West Orange 19-0 at home on Thursday, Sept. 10, to move to 2-1. PCT is also 2-1.
