Temple Ner Tamid to host violin concert

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The community is invited to Temple Ner Tamid, located at 936 Broad St., Bloomfield, for a special “Artist in Residence” Shabbat, featuring Grammy Award-winning violinist Lisa Gutkin on Friday, Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m., with a dinner and concert concert following.

An engaging musician, Gutkin is a member of the Klezmatics. She played violin in Sting’s Broadway musical, “The Last Ship.” As a soloist and band leader, Gutkin swings seamlessly from Klezmer to traditional Irish fiddle tunes to blues, Balkan or Appalachian sounds. Or she might pick up a tenor guitar and sing one of her own songs. With the Klezmatics, she won a Grammy Award for best world-music album, “Wonder Wheel,” in which the band wrote original new music to unpublished lyrics by Woody Guthrie. Pete Seeger described her setting of Guthrie lyrics, “Gonna Get Through This World,” as “a work of genius.”

Gutkin will join Temple Ner Tamid for Shabbat worship at 6:30 p.m. Services will be followed by a congregational potluck dinner. Following the dinner, Lisa will perform in concert with her trio, featuring Pete Rushefsky on cimbalom and Uri Sharlin on accordion.

The Artist in Residence program is underwritten by Marge Grayson and Paul Grayson, in memory of Grayson’s mother, Elinor Neifeld z’l.
