BLOOMFIELD — The Bloomfield High School football team dropped a heartbreaking 14-13 decision to Montclair on Thursday, Sept. 10, at Montclair’s Woodman Field. It was the 105th meeting between the teams, who traditionally used to meet on Thanksgiving,
The Bengals, who moved to 1-2 after their second straight loss, hope to get back on the winning track when they host Clifton on Friday, Sept. 18, at Foley Field.
BHS defensive back Christian Cradle returned a blocked field-goal attempt 55 yards for a touchdown to even the score at 7-7 right before the end of the first half.
The Bengals took a 13-7 lead in the third quarter when Brandon Plummer scored on a 16-yard run. The point-after kick was blocked.
Montclair scored a touchdown on a fourth-down pass with 6;47 left in the fourth quarter, followed by the decisive extra point kick.
Notes — Montclair leads the series 77-27-1. The series dates back to 1903. The teams met in a classic North Jersey, Section 1, Group 5 state championship game in 2012 at MetLife Stadium, with Montclair winning in double overtime, 16-13. Two of Boomfield’s three losses that season were to Montclair, with the other being on Thanksgiving.
