Glen Ridge HS football team falls to Cedar Grove for first loss of season

GLEN RIDGE, NJ – The Glen Ridge High School varsity football team’s undefeated start to the season came to an end with a 28-14 home loss to Cedar Grove on Friday afternoon, Sept. 29, at Hurrell Field in a North Jersey Super Football Conference-National Red Division game.

The Ridgers moved to a 3-1 record.

GRHS led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. Senior quarterback/co-captain Tyler Liddy threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to junior split end Tyler Strong and senior co-captain Joe Marchesano kicked the extra point.

The teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter. Senior split end Avery Hackett ran for a 63-yard TD and Marchesano kicked the extra point for the Ridgers, who led 14-7 at the half.

But Cedar Grove rallied in the second half with two TDs in the third quarter and one TD in the fourth quarter to move to a 2-2 record.

Passing: Liddy: 14 of 34 attempts for 185 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs.

Rushing: Hackett: 2 carries for 71 yards. Strong: 2 carries for 22 yards. Running back Joe Marchesano: 11 carries for 18 yards. LIddy: 6 carries for 2 yards.

Receiving: Strong: 3 catches for 76 yards, 1 TD. Senior tight end David Weissenberger: 5 catches for 14 yards. Junior split end Simon Low: 2 catches for 62 yards. Hackett: 2 catches for 8 yards. Marchesano 2 catches for 25 yards.

Defense: Senior defensive back Jose McCallen-Villafene: 13 tackles, 1 sack. DB Marchesano: 12 tackles, 4 sacks. Senior linebacker/co-captain Max Auborn, 10 tackles. Senior lineman Jack Olczak: 9 tackles. DB Hackett: 8 tackles, 1 sack. Sophomore DB Brendan Easter: 6 tackles, 1 sack. Senior linebacker/co-captain Kieran Moran: 4 tackles, 1 sack. DB Weissenberger: 4 tackles.

Next game: The Ridgers will host Verona on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. at Hurrell Field in a NJSFC non-division game.
