GLEN RIDGE, NJ — The Glen Ridge High School girls tennis captured the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 state tournament championship.
The second-seeded Ridgers defeated fourth-seeded Whippany Park, 4-1, in the final on Monday, Oct. 16, at Freeman Courts.
Junior Riley O’Sullivan won 6-2, 5-7, (10-6) at first singles; senior Tessa Rothmann won, 6-4, 6-3, at third singles; senior Siena Atkinson and junior Adina Foster won 7-5, 6-0 at first doubles; and junior Michelle Plaisted and sophomore Hazel Tat won 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles. Junior Sophia Appelbaum-Roth competed at second singles.
The Ridgers, under longtime head coach Lisbeth Crouse, won their sixth straight match to improve to 11-5 this season.
Glen Ridge defeated No. 10 seed Hasbrouck Heights, 5-0, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Freeman Courts and defeated No. 3 seed Verona, 3-2, in the semifinals on Thursday, Oct. 12, at Freeman Courts. It was the second time Glen Ridge defeated Verona this season, also by a 3-2 score on Friday, Sept. 15, at Verona.
