Nutley HS softball team is No. 2 seed in state sectional tournament

NUTLEY – The Nutley High School varsity softball team hopes to make a strong run in the state tournament.

The Raiders received the No. 2 seed in the state North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 tournament and will host No. 15 seed Kennedy-Iselin in the first round on May 23. The winner will face the winner between No. 10 Cranford and No. 7 seed Matawan in the quarterfinals on May 25. The semifinals are May 31 and the final is June 3.

The top seed is Middletown North.

Emily Holden tossed a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and Sydney Kunz went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored in the 10-0 win at Caldwell on May 16 in a Super Essex Conference non-division game. Stefanie Ziemer went 2-for-4; Emily DeAngelo had a three-run double and Cassie Angelo went 1-for-2 with a double, two RBI, two walks and two runs scored.

Holden fired a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and one walk in the 8-0 win over Belleville on May 17 in a SEC non-division game. Alanis Concepcion went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Ziemer went 2-for-4.

The Raiders, who are ranked No. 10 in the state, improved to a 19-5 record.
