IRVINGTON – Irvington High School alum Asnage Castelly gave a good effort at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
Castelly, a 1998 IHS graduate, competed in wrestling for the country of Haiti in the 74 kg freestyle division.
In the quarterfinals Friday, Aug. 19, Castelly lost to Iran’s Hassan Yazdan by a score of 4-0.
Yazdan went on to win to gold medal with a 3-1 win over Aniuar Geduev in the gold-medal match.
Castelly, after losing to Yazdan, wrestled in the repechage round 2 where he lost to Soner Demirtas of Turkey, 4-0.
Castelly and his family moved to the United States from Haiti when he was 9. After graduating from IHS in 1998, Castelly wrestled at American International College in Springfield, Mass.
He currently lives in Massachusetts and is an assistant wrestling coach Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, Mass.
Castelly was the flag bearer for Haiti during the Opening Ceremony of the Rio Olympics, Aug. 5.
Castelly also lettered in football at IHS.
