IRVINGTON, NJ – The Irvington High School boys varsity basketball team defeated University, 63-56, Jan. 28 at home to clinch the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division championship.
Kymani Dunbar had 13 points with eight rebounds and three assists; Dezlyn Sebastien had 13 points with three assists; Karriem Thomas had 12 points with five assists and four rebounds; and Moses Pierre had 10 points with seven rebounds.
The next day, the Blue Knights defeated Cristo Rey of Newark, 69-63 at home in divisional action. Pierre had 19 points and 10 rebounds; Nazamier Brooks had 14 points and five rebounds; Dameer Vital had 10 points and eight rebounds and Sebastien posted eight points, four assists and three steals.
IHS fell to Wayne Hills, 63-40, Feb. 2 at home in a non-conference game. Dunbar scored 17 points; Vital had 10 points; Sebastien had five points; Pierre contributed four points; and Taiyon Battle and Brooks each added two points.
IHS moved to a 15-3 overall record. The Blue Knights are 9-0 in the division.
Irvington, under head coach Elias Brantley, received the No. 7 seed in the 73rd Essex County Tournament and will begin play in the first round (round of 16) Feb. 9 against the preliminary third round winner between No. 26 seed Nutley and No. 10 seed West Orange. Nutley defeated No. 39 seed Technology and defeated No. 23 seed Shabazz.
