WEST ORANGE — The Seton Hall Prep football team lost a heartbreaking 9-6 decision to Pope John XXIII (Sparta) at Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field in West Orange on Saturday, Sept. 26, to move their record to 2-3 on the season.
Luke Gialanella’s 1-yard touchdown run with 46 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner. Sophomore Schuyler Travis blocked the extra point to give the Pirates a chance, but Carter Johnston sealed the victory for Pope John when he batted a pass into the air and intercepted it with 24 seconds left.
Pope John took an early 3-0 lead on a Christian Severinsen 21-yard field goal. The Pirates responded in the second quarter when Jaylin Bullock scored on a 4-yard run, though the extra-point attempt failed, giving the Pirates a 6-3 halftime advantage.
Late in the fourth quarter, Pope John fumbled and senior Jayden Crawford recovered for Seton Hall with 1:14 left. But the Pirates fumbled the ball back to the Lions on their first play with 1:06 left.
