With the second half of the season in full swing, the Bloomfield High School varsity girls’ soccer team is hoping to keep improving.
The Bengals defeated Science, 5-1, Oct. 10, at Brookdale Park. Mia Nalic had two goals; and Julia Nephew, Anatalia Pena, and Brianna Trigueros-Pericone each had one goal. Ally Reyes, Grace Perrotta, and Julia Nephew each had an assist.
BHS lost to Mount St. Dominic, 3-2, Oct. 12, at Brookdale Park. Pena and Trigueros-Pericone each had a goal.
BHS head coach Jon Aliaga has been pleased with his team’s progress.
“The season is going well. We are improving as a team after every game,” Aliaga said last week. “We hit a bump in the road when we lost to Verona (6-3 decision on Oct. 6) – it was our fourth game that week. The team is starting to gel and play with more of a purpose. We are finding our identity as a team and we are currently working on playing consistently for the whole 80-minute games. When we score first, we are 6-0 as a team. However, when the opposition scores first, we are 0-8-1. Right now our focus is to begin each half by setting a strong tone and scoring first.”
The 11th-seeded Bengals unfortunately lost to 14th-seeded Belleville, 1-0, in the second preliminary round of the Essex County Tournament on Monday night, Oct. 16, at Foley Field to move to a 6-9-1 record.
