WEST ORANGE, NJ — Ilankai Tamil Mantram New Jersey, a community organization that comprises of Sri Lankan Tamil families from West Orange, Newark, Edison and surrounding areas, had its annual community gathering at the Turtle Back Rock picnic area in West Orange on Sunday, Aug. 29.

Tamil community in and around Newark annually gathers in the summer to meet and greet friends and families who live apart from each other. Everyone brought Sri Lankan traditional dishes and special food and drinks to share with other members of the community. The event organizers entertained all the children and adults who gathered at the park through various fun activities such as games, a tug-of-war competition, a cake-eating contest and sports. Children, who were actively involved in running contests and other fun activities, received medals

The event showcased the unique traditions of Sri Lankan Tamil families. Under the leadership of Ilankai Tamil Mantram President Selliah Gnanaseharan, secretary Theepan Thirukumaran and all other members of the organization, the event was a great success. Selliah also thanked the members and event attendees for their concerted efforts and commitment to community building.

Ilankai Tamil Mantram New Jersey has been actively engaged in community-building efforts, aiming to bring progress among the members of Tamil community and families living in New Jersey. Some of the many communities activities the organization currently undertakes include: teaching Tamil language to students; advising and guiding high school students in matters related to higher education and university admission; taking educational trips in and out of New Jersey; organizing seminars and art workshops; and observing Tamil cultural and religious days, such as Saraswati Puja.
