WEST ORANGE, NJ — Sixty-seven students from theater, band, orchestra, marching band, glee club and choirs were inducted into the West Orange High School Tri-M Music Honor Society on Nov. 14.
Tri-M Music Honor Society, formerly known as Modern Music Masters, is both a middle school and high school honor society and is a program of the National Association for Music Education. It recognizes students for their academic and musical achievements and provides leadership and service opportunities to young musicians. Each school has its own chapter, which is run by the students but supervised by an adviser or sponsor. There are approximately 6,200 participating chapters internationally.
To be eligible for membership, a student must maintain a B average in their music classes, a B average in all of their academic courses, be presently enrolled in a music course at their school, and be recommended for membership by their school’s music faculty.
Senior Ruth Mesfin opened the evening by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” followed by Tri-M Choral members singing the West Orange High School song. Tri-M adviser John Hellyer welcomed family and friends and additional selections by students highlighted flute and orchestra.
Tri-M officers at West Orange High School are President Kefi Mutume, Vice President Selam Bellette, secretary Matthew Carlos, treasurer Julia Edelman, band liaison Wolfgang Schneitinger, choir liaison Jailyn McBurrows, drama liaison Sophia Torres and orchestra liaison Alexandra Glascow.
