MAPLEWOOD / SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — At its March 6 meeting, the Maplewood Township Committee honored local women who have dutifully and honorably served the communities of Maplewood and South Orange. The committee also issued a proclamation in recognition of Women’s History Month.
“In service to our towns these strong and principled women have volunteered countless hours of their time over the years to shape our local and state governments, communities, downtowns and schools by serving on the Maplewood Township Committee, South Orange Board of Trustees, South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education and in the State Legislature, and running the Community Coalition on Race, and local special improvement districts,” Maplewood Township Committeewoman Nancy Adams said via email. “The impact of the service of these women cannot be understated and is greatly appreciated. I was humbled and honored to have them join me last night. Behold the power of women who support themselves, their families, their friends and each other.”
Women honored at the event included former Maplewood Mayor Ellen Davenport, who was the first and only woman to hold the position in Maplewood; former Maplewood Committeewoman Connie Cosgrove, who was the first woman to serve on the Township Committee; former Maplewood Deputy Mayor Kathy Leventhal; Maplewood Committeewoman Nancy Adams; former Maplewood Committeewoman India Larrier; village President Sheena Collum, the first woman to be elected to this position; South Orange Trustee Karen Hartshorn Hilton; former village Trustee Mary Theroux; former SOMA Board of Education President Beth Daugherty; former BOE members Andrea Wren Harden and Maureen Jones; Assemblywoman and Deputy Speaker Mila Jasey, who is a former member of the SOMA BOE; Community Coalition on Race Executive Director Nancy Gagnier, who is also a former BOE member; and Springfield Avenue Partnership Executive Director Julie Doran.
